On April 3, 2017, a 3,000-pound boiler exploded at the Loy Lange Box Company in Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri. The deadly explosion caused the boiler to shoot through the air like a rocket, flying 500 feet before crashing into the Faultless Linen facility nearby. Three people were killed and one person was injured at Faultless Linen, while one person was killed and two were injured at Loy Lange.
This preventable tragedy happened due to a series of errors by various defendants in the case beginning with the manufacture and design of the boiler continuing throughout the life of the pressure vessel. These failures included inadequate water chemistry treatment, inadequate blowdowns to remove sediment, inadequate inspections by the vessel’s owner and outside consultants, as well as a deficient repair of the leaking vessel four years before the explosion that left defective, corroded material in place.
After two years of extensive litigation, which included over 75 depositions and over 20 experts, a settlement of slightly over $47 million was reached on behalf of all Plaintiffs with the defendants. Newman Bronson & Wallis trial lawyers Mark Bronson and Lauren Bronson represented the family of one of those killed in the explosion.
